PETALING JAYA: Parents who want their children to study medicine must first ask themselves if their offspring have the right attitude for the profession. Malaysian Medical Council elected member Dr Milton Lum said many parents and students seemed to overlook this factor when planning to study medicine.

He noted that doctors with the right attitude were generally popular and patients often visited them repeatedly.

“There are doctors that you would continue to go to for treatment and advice, while there are some that you would stop seeing just after the first visit. So, ask yourself if your child has the values and skills that you would want to see in a doctor.

“And the next question is, whether you are pushing your children into studying medicine,” he said.

Dr Lum, whose son is also a doctor, said parents should not force any child to go into a particular field of study.

Dr Lum will be speaking at the 23rd Star Education Fair to be held this weekend on Jan 8 and 9 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Malaysian Medical Association deputy secretary Dr Kuljit Singh and Prof Dr Zaleha Abdullah Mahdy of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia who will speak on options for medical programmes and recognition, and a doctor’s life will be joining him at the session “Medicine & Dentistry.” Universiti Malaya’s Assoc Prof Dr David Ngeow will speak on “What it takes to be a dentist”.
