Aku dan pemegang sijil SPM

Terus terang aku katakan,
Aku paling tak suka bila ahli2 politik masuk campur urusan pendidikan.
Pelajar2 A+ mesti dapat biasiswa kerajaan.
Pelajar2 A+ mesti dihantar ke luar negara.
Tak kira apa universiti pun.
Tak kira course apa sekalipun.
Yang penting dapat ke luar negara.
Pencapaian akademik memang superb.
Tetapi bagaimana dengan individu itu sendiri?
Cara berfikir, minat, kebolehan dan yang lain2nya?
Ramai yang aku jumpa,
walaupun score A+ dalam BI, cakap bahasa Inggeris pun tak boleh.
Begitu juga dengan Bahasa Malaysia.
Habis macamana?

More than a string of As needed

I WRITE from personal experience about the issue of SPM or STPM top scorers, those who managed to get a string of As for the subjects they had taken. On paper, this achievement may sound, and even look, impressive. But in real life, it may not be so. We have all seen over the last many years how those who had scored a string of As in their SPM and STPM examinations had not excelled in later life.

There is not one among the many who were sent abroad who created an impact when they were at university, or when they returned to the country to assume posts. So few were admitted into the prestigious Ivy League and Oxbridge universities of America and the United Kingdom, respectively. If some of them had gained admission, surely it could be considered an achievement.

So far, how many among the present group of students who had strings of As even bothered to apply for admission into such universities?

If they had, and if their applications for scholarship were rejected, then surely there is cause for alarm. The truth is that these top scorers only have pieces of paper to show the As they got for the dozen or so subjects. Many of them can’t even speak English or Malay properly. They could get the answers right, but might not know what they wrote about.

If they really wanted to excel, then they should on their own seek admission into any of the prestitigious universities, so their qualification and personal achievements can be verified and recognised. All of them just want to study in any university abroad, irrespective of which university, as long as it is overseas.

I did not possess an impressive academic record but managed to gain admission into one of the Ivy League universities in New York City. The university was impressed with my academic achievements and extra-curricular activities and other personal interests and hobbies. They took into consideration all these things.

Yet, Mara officials rejected my application for a scholarship.

I had to work for a year before I was given a study loan the following year on appeal. I can say that till today, Mara has not got many students who attended these Ivy League and Oxbridge universities, and I may very well be the only one, albeit under a study loan.
