Bomb hoax caller nabbed

IPOH: A jealous man, in a desperate attempt to stop his girlfriend from going to Kuala Lumpur, made a telephone call claiming there was a bomb at a railway bridge between Bidor and Tanjung Malim.His hoax resulted in more than 1,000 train passengers being stranded at several railway stations in Perak last Thursday.Train services from both directions were also temporarily halted from 2am to 1pm on Thursday following the call at 1.45am.Police arrested the 25-year-old from Teluk Intan after tracing the call, said state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan.“He claimed he wanted to prevent his girlfriend from travelling to Kuala Lumpur to attend a course on direct selling,” he told a press conference here yesterday.DCP Mohd Shukri said the suspect, a direct sales company employee, was arrested at 6.10pm last Saturday and was being remanded until Thursday.DCP Mohd Shukri said two bomb squads had combed a 76km stretch from Tapah to Tanjung Malim in search of the alleged bomb.They found a mineral water bottle wrapped in a plastic mat under some stones at the Sungai Pekan Lama Sungkai bridge, but no explosives.
